Believing that twins are never separated, women of the Ewe people who have lost a twin will replace it with one of these figures. They represent both male and female which is apparent from the presence of breasts and genitalia, but not necessarily from the facial appearance which perhaps indicates that they are not supposed to be real, but to represent another world. The figures are roughly carved and because they are handcrafted, they vary slightly in size giving them a folk art look.
