Denu

This jacket is called Denu. It uses both Ewe fabric and my own handwoven fabric. Mr Gilbert Ahiagble wove the Ewe cloth and lives in Denu, Ghana. He also weaves and designs original fabrics using primarily cotton. I used his fabric in the back and front of the jacket. My fabric is woven in a shadow weave technique and is color coordinated with Mr. Ahiagble's fabric. The lining of the jacket is created with fabrics purchased in Ghana -- batiks, printed cloth and silk-screened cloth. The jacket is reversible.

On the inside of the jacket is embroidered a spider's web -- in honor of Anansi, the spider who according to a Ghanaian folk tale gave the knowledge of weaving to the Ashanti people.
