Talking Textile CardsAfrican strip weaving can also be referred to as
"talking cloth" because each piece bears a
message. Each composition of threads used to create the
warp pattern by the Ghanaian weavers of Kente cloth has a
name and meaning, as do the more than 80 different inlaid
weft motifs woven by the Malinke weavers of the Korhogo
region of Ivory Coast. The story cloths serve also as
educational tools much like our school books, for the
imparting of moral values of conduct. In these cards each
message is recorded, as is the name of the weaver, or the
weaving community. |
