Items for sale to tourists passing through Bandiagara, Mali in Mamadou's display case. From left to right, "Dige Nommo" the Water God statue, candleholder of a woman carrying a water jar, a series of hair picks topped with various dogon symbols. These hair picks have been stylized for the tourist market, however Dogon hairdressers, when braiding hair, traditionally use similar picks. In Dogon society, women of the blacksmith caste traditionally play the role of hairdresser in the village (click photo).
